Defense of Marriage and the Homosexual Agenda

Many people believe that stopping homosexual marriage is a matter of defending the institution of marriage itself. And they're right, but only intuitively I fear, and only in so far as they go in their deliberations. No, I am afraid that most people fall far short of a full appreciation of the matter. So rather than subscribing to conclusions without full deliberation of the facts (otherwise known as prejudice), lets consider this matter a bit more thoroughly. And while we contemplate what God and scriptures say about the homosexual threat to our culture, let's be certain to consider what God actually says as opposed to what others claim He says or what our own prejudices would predispose us to believe. We may find out that we're more culpable in this crisis than we would like to admit.

I truly get angry when I see people claiming to be Christians, and proclaiming that God hates homosexuals. I heard it said once, by the Rev. Mr. Donald Baker, that "When you realize that God hates all the same people you do, you know you've created God in your own image." This simple statement is more profound than first blush might suggest. Yes, it speaks directly to the issue of bigotry born of prejudice. The fact is that God doesn't hate anyone, not even homosexuals. Moreover, no group of people are any less deserving of God's love and mercy than you and I, not even homosexuals. Beyond this the quote speaks directly to the real cause of the moral crisis in our nation today, namely that so many people who claim to be Christian have created God in their own image.

I'll get back to the issue of creating God in our own image shortly. But now I want to address the matter of bigotry and prejudice towards others. It has been well said that good people are perfectly willing to be tolerant and understanding of the sins of others, as long as others sin the same way those good people do. It's only when others sin in ways that good people do not that those others become intolerable. And to any who believe that someone else's sin might be worse than their own I would cite Matthew 7: 1 - 5.

Of course, before I go any farther I must discuss Matthew 7: 1 - 5 in more depth because this has to be one of the most misapplied and abused passages in scripture. This passage does not mean that you should ignore sin. This passage does not mean that you should somehow hesitate to identify sin as sin. This passage does not mean, imply or suggest that you should be even tacitly accepting of sin, in either yourself or others. This passage is decidedly not a command to be politically correct. What it does mean is that you must take all care not to condemn anyone as being beyond the pale of God's mercy. It means that you must always remember that you are just as deserving of God's wrath and judgment as is any, as is every, other sinner. And it means that each and every repentant sinner is just as welcome to a place at the table of God's mercy and salvation as are you, and to suggest otherwise is to forfeit your own place at that table.

In other words, with specific regard to the topic of homosexuals, Matthew 7: 1 - 5 does not mean that you or I or anyone else should be timid about declaring that homosexuality is sin, or that those who unrepentantly practice homosexuality will face God's judgment. God's Word is clear that homosexual behavior is sin. The punishment for homosexual behavior was death (Leviticus 20: 13). But don't forget that the punishment for heterosexual adultery was also death (Deuteronomy 22: 22). We sin no better, and they sin no worse.

So we should tell homosexuals that their behavior is sinful, as is all extramarital sexual behavior, but we should also tell them that God still loves them and wants to welcome them home if they will only repent their sin and believe.

Now with that understood, consider the question, "Do homosexuals pose a threat to the institution of marriage, and therefore to our very culture?" Well, indeed the institution of marriage is foundational, not just to our culture but to all civilizations. Marriage is the basis on which the family unit is built, and families are the building blocks of communities which are the building blocks of cultures. So it is quite true that as goes marriage, so goes the nation. If marriage crumbles, families crumble and communities follow.

Nonetheless, I submit to you that homosexual marriage, indeed the whole homosexual agenda, is not the cause, but is instead reflective, of the problem. In other words homosexuality is the symptom, not the disease. Moreover, homosexuality is only the most recently noticeable manifest symptom of our cultural problem. And if the root cause of this problem is not remedied there will be more. We are already witnessing the beginning of pedophiles demanding civil protected status.

NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association) is already actively making itself known, laying the groundwork for a future challenge to the authority of the government to restrict the behavior of its members. And if we, as a society, have abdicated the moral authority to condemn homosexual behavior as unacceptable then we have already abdicated the moral authority to condemn pedophilia.

As an intellectual exercise lets think about this. On what basis can we condemn pedophilia? On the grounds that it is immoral? By whose standards? We've already allowed Satan's forces to dismiss as forbidden by the First Amendment any reliance on God's law as a societal moral compass (the myth of the separation of church and state). No doubt the ACLU will argue, on behalf of NAMBLA, that Nature (capitalized to reflect that it has become the god of secular humanism) has made people sexual at puberty, and that the age of majority is therefore nothing more than an arbitrary construct of Judeo-Christian morality. They will no doubt further argue that since the age of majority is an arbitrary construct of Judeo-Christian morality, the First Amendment constrains governmental bodies from imposing it on others, on pain of (the myth of) the separation of church and state. By what authority, or reason, will we then condemn pedophilia?

Still, let's not make the mistake of believing that our current moral crisis was brought about by activist homosexuals. No, we began our descent down this slippery slope long before homosexuals began to make themselves known. To see the truth of this we need only consider God's Word.

Nearly everyone who rails against homosexuality cites Romans 1: 18 - 32. So let's consider this passage. After all, this is our objective, to know what God has to say on the subject.

In verse 18 we read that "... the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness," (Romans 1: 18) Let's consider what this verse actually says. Note that scripture does not say that the wrath of God is revealed to anyone, but rather it is revealed against something. That's right, His wrath is revealed against something, not someone. His wrath is not revealed against any men, but against their ungodliness and unrighteousness instead. So who are these men, what is their unrighteousness, and how is God's wrath revealed against the same?

First, just who are these men? The verse goes on to say that they are men who hold the truth in unrighteousness. The word "hold" here means just that. It means to grasp, to restrain, to constrain. When you subvert the truth with rationalizations, usually to accommodate the desires of your heart, then you are holding the truth in unrighteousness. Let me use a more explicit example if I may. When you rationalize that it will be okay to divorce your wife because you really love this other woman so dearly, you are holding the truth in unrighteousness. You are constraining the truth enough to allow for your desires, your sin.

Read verses 19 - 22. These men know God, they know the truth and are without excuse. They know right from wrong. They are born with the innate knowledge of good and evil. But instead of accepting God's truth they become puffed up with pride, and their foolish hearts are darkened. They think themselves wise, but are made fools.

Next, what is their ungodliness and unrighteousness? Read verse 23. Notice that the verse does not say that these men change God into an image like a man, but that they change His glory into something that seems like themselves, something that seems at home in our natural world. Scripture tells us that God's glory is so great that to behold it would kill us (e.g. Exodus 33: 20 - 23, wherein Moses had asked God to behold His glory). Moreover,. scripture tells us that fear (awe or respect) of the Lord is the first step toward wisdom (Job 28: 28, Psalms 111: 10, Proverbs 1: 7; 9: 10; 15: 33). But the men spoken of in this passage do not fear God. They fear neither His glory nor His wrath. They have constrained the truth of God to be something like themselves.

How many times have you heard someone say something akin to, "My God is a loving God. I don't believe He would send anyone to Hell." People make such statements in defiant contradiction to scripture, to God's Word. In other words, they are simultaneously declaring the Word to be a lie and explicitly defining God, not according to His true nature, but according to their own morality. They are defining God to be like themselves. They are creating God in their own image, and this is their ungodliness and unrighteousness (I told you we would get back to this point).

So how is God's wrath revealed against their unrighteousness? He turns them over to their own devices. Read the rest of Romans Chapter 1, and pay specific attention to verses 24 and 26. Scripture is explicit. "For this cause God gave them over ...." In verse 25 Paul writes the same thing I just wrote in the previous paragraph, that these men "changed the truth of God into a lie, ...." He goes on to write that they, "... worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator, ...." There's a name for this. It's called Secular Humanism.

It has been well said that Secular Humanism is the religion that holds that man created God in his own image. It has been equally well said that Nature is the god of Secular Humanism. And Paul tells us that it is Secular Humanism, not homosexuality, that is the reason God turns men over to burn in their own vile lusts. In other words, God does not turn His back on men because they become homosexual. Instead, men become homosexual because God has already turned His back on them.

No, God doesn't turn His back on men because they are homosexual, but because they first turn their backs on Him. And as surely as He turns away from them because they first turn away from Him, He will just as quickly welcome them home if they will only turn back to Him  Read I Corinthians 6: 9 - 11. The terms "effeminate" and "abusers of themselves with mankind" are references to homosexuals. But then read too that Paul wrote, "And such were some of you."

So if you still think that your sins aren't as bad as homosexuality, I would ask if you've ever coveted anything that wasn't yours. Now read the whole list from I Corinthians 6: 9 - 11. Have you ever disobeyed your parents? Read the list at the end of Romans 1. Homosexuality is no worse than coveting and disobeying your parents. And coveting and disobeying your parents are no less than homosexuality. So why don't we all just recognize that we are all sinners, we all need to repent, and rejoice with each other when one of us does.

So yes, we need to defend the institution of marriage in our society, if our society is to survive. And rejecting homosexual marriage is an important part of the defense of marriage. Even accepting civil unions for homosexual couples is a threat to marriage because it renders the God-ordained institution of marriage nothing more than an anachronistic distinction without a difference. But stopping homosexual marriage is far from sufficient to defend marriage in our society.

No if we truly desire to defend marriage then we must address all of the symptoms in sequence, all the way back to the source of the threat. To address only homosexuals will not defend marriage. It will be at best an ineffective response to only the most recent symptom of a greater problem, and at worst an act of hatred, of bigotry.

If we truly wish to defend marriage, then we must reject homosexual marriage indeed. And then we must reject divorce, that blight on marriage that has done far more damage to both the institution of marriage and to our families, and indeed to our society as a whole, than homosexuals ever could. If we are to defend marriage, and our families, then we must reject homosexual marriage, and divorce, and then adultery.

Yes, I would gladly vote for a real Defense of Marriage Act. But mine would include provisions for all of these issues. I wish we would return to a day in this nation when adultery was a crime that was actually punished by law, and divorce was simply unacceptable. But that would require a lot of repentance from a lot of our fellow citizens. And therein lies the truth of how we can defend marriage and our society. By bringing all of our neighbors to repentance, and by rejecting Secular Humanism.

Maybe the nation will repent, and maybe it won't. But luckily none of us must wait for the rest. Instead each one of us must make this choice for ourselves. Each of us must decide whether to worship and serve God as God, or worship and serve the created. And remember, whether you're homosexual or heterosexual, the penalty for all sin is death (Leviticus 20: 13, Deuteronomy 22: 22, Romans 6: 23), but salvation is only a repentance away (Ephesians 2: 8 - 10).


Matthew 7: 1 - 5   Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Leviticus 20: 13   If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Deuteronomy 22: 22   If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.

Romans 1: 18 - 32    For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Exodus 33: 20 - 23    And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

Job 28: 28    And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Psalms 111: 10    The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 1: 7    The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9: 10    The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Proverbs 15: 33    The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

I Corinthians 6: 9 - 11    Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
