Abortion: God's View and Ours

On Wednesday, 18 April 2007, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the federal ban on partial birth abortion. This would have been cause for celebration, but for two reasons. First, the simple fact that we need a special law to say that this barbarous act is illegal is more than cause for sadness. But as if that weren't enough, on that very same day Brad Henry (D), Governor of the State of Oklahoma, vetoed S.B. 714, legislation that would have gotten the State of Oklahoma out of the abortion business.

And when I learned that Brad Henry is an ordained Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Shawnee, I was simply taken aback.

God's Word is plain. This is not an issue on which men of conscience may disagree. The only way possible to align yourself to the "pro-choice" side of the abortion issue is to flatly reject the Word of God, to rebel against His express will, and to willfully embrace abomination before Him. But don't take my word for this. Instead let's examine scripture, and find out what God actually says on the subject.

Read Leviticus 18: 21, Leviticus 20: 1 - 5, I Kings 11: 7, II Kings 23: !0, and Jeremiah 32: 35 and we quickly discover two important points. First, the idea of sacrificing children for the hope of a better life is far from a new idea. Second, to do so is an abomination before God.

Note the phrase, "... pass through the fire ...," in these passages. Regardless of what you may have seen in old movies, these children were not sacrificed by being stabbed to death. They were very much burned alive, laid to rest on a stone mantle that was heated by, and open to, the flames within the vessel (the idol). The child's flesh cooked as he or she lay on the heated surface, until he or she eventually fell into the open flame.

Does that sound horrible? Do you think abortionists today do any less? One very popular abortion technique literally involves burning the child alive, albeit by chemical means, but rest assured that it is no less painful. Nor is the infamous dilation and curettage, wherein the child is literally torn limb from limb until the remnants of his or her small body are no longer able to sustain life. No, the children who are sacrificed today are treated no more humanely than those sacrificed to Baal, or Molech or Chemosh.

And don't be deceived into believing that abortion is any less an abomination before God just because Planned Parenthood doesn't call on the name of Baal when they kill a child. Whether someone is "worshipping and serving" Molech, or "the creature more than the Creator," they are worshipping a false god instead of the one true God (see Romans 1: 25). Idolatry is still idolatry, and in both cases the deceiver is the same, Satan.

Just like in days of old, and in direct and explicit contradiction to God's Word, Satan still deceives people into sacrificing their children for the hope a better future. God's Word tells us that children are a blessing (Psalms 127: 3), yet Satan has people convinced that if they don't kill their child their life will be ruined. And the ironic truth is that by having an abortion, women increase their risks of a host of cancers including breast, ovarian, uterine and colorectal, to name a few, plus they increase their risk of miscarriage in the future.1

Satan has also deceived many, including the Supreme Court of the United States, into believing that unborn children are somehow not yet people. Again, God's Word tells us that the opposite is true. Read Isaiah 49: 1, Jeremiah 1: 4, 5 and Psalms 139: 13 - 16 and you will quickly learn that the unborn are very much people in God's eyes.

Moreover, not only are unborn children fully people in God's eyes, as entitled to the same protection of law as anyone, but they are in fact a specially protected class of people. Exodus 21: 22 - 25 tells us explicitly that the punishment for harming an unborn child is no different than for harming anyone else, up to and including requiring capital punishment for the capital offense. But note also that even if one does not harm an unborn child, but simply deprives that child of any part of their due time in the womb, that alone is a crime to be punished. In other words, according to God violence against the unborn, including abortion, is very much the original hate crime, and the unborn are the original protected class.

No, this is not an issue over which men of conscience may disagree. To subscribe to the pro-choice position on abortion is to defy God's will. But what should our position be? Not surprisingly as Christians we should all subscribe to the pro-life position, just not for the reasons most think.

Most people who consider themselves pro-life, including many Christians, hold as their principle concern the protection of the unborn babies. And on its face this seems a perfectly fine position to take. But I would caution that at best this should not be our principle concern, and at worst it can lead people astray in the most heinous ways.

Indeed Satan, that great and subtle deceiver, has already lead many to conclude that protecting the innocent babies justifies killing abortionists. He has convinced many to unwittingly usurp God's sovereignty by proclaiming God's judgment against those whom God has not yet judged. And, as before, as is common with Satan's deceptions, this is diametrically opposite to what God's Word tells us.

God's Word tells us that we are here to be salt and light to the world around us. God's Word tells us that we are here to minister to the lost, to preach the Gospel of repentance and salvation. When it comes to the unborn innocent, I am perfectly content to do as Abraham did, and trust "... the Judge of all the earth [to] do right, " (Genesis 18: 25b). The murdered innocent are not the ones in danger of having to face a just and vengeful God. For more on this, read my article "The Lamb's Book of Life."

So our concern should lie, not with the unborn babies, but with those who would kill them. We need to be concerned with the doctors and nurses and staff who man the abortion clinics, and with the government officials who empower them to ply their trade. These are the souls to which God has charged us to minister. We need to be concerned less with the innocent children and more with the young parents who have them killed. These, not the innocent victims, are the ones who will someday stand before the Judgment Seat of God to answer for their actions. And if they face God unrepentant on that dread and fateful day, do not let it be because we were too deceived to fulfill our responsibility to God and His Word. Read again the passage from Leviticus 20, and know that ours is a dread responsibility, one for which God will hold us to account.

And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.

Scripture tells us that when iniquity abounds the love of many will grow cold (Matthew 24: 12). Let's just make sure that it's not our love that grows cold.

If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for. Charles Spurgeon

Leviticus 18: 21    And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

Leviticus 20: 1 - 5    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones. And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name. And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people.

I Kings 11: 7    Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

II Kings 23: 10    And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

Jeremiah 32: 35    And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

Romans 1: 25    Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Psalms 127: 3    Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.

Isaiah 49: 1    Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

Jeremiah 1: 4, 5    Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Psalms 139: 13 - 16    For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Exodus 21: 22 - 25    If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Genesis 18: 25    That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

Matthew 24: 12    And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
